Insulation
Old buildings are also considered more difficult than modern houses to heat and keep clean. This need not be the case. In order to retrofit insulation to older buildings, there is plenty that can be achieved. Such work, however, needs to be done with an understanding of how traditional buildings function and with the use of materials that work in accordance with the way humidity is controlled by these structures.
Failure to do so will lead to condensation, moisture issues, and eventually endanger parts of the house, such as timber frames. We may advise on insulation and fit it to secure existing structures and materials and build a warmer and healthier domestic climate.We are skilled in the use of a variety of insulating plasters, including hemp plaster, wood wool and sheep's wool insulation, as a historic building restoration company.
Why Use Lime?
- Properties constructed before 1919 would have been constructed using natural earthen materials.
- It is vapour permeable and allows the structure to breathe, unlike modern plasters. This helps to prevent condensation and dampness.
- Lime is an environmentally friendly material which, as part of its setting system, absorbs CO2 from the atmosphere.
- Lime-based material flexes to accommodate older buildings' natural motion. It can do this without breaking, unlike rigid materials.
